On Saturday the 9th of November the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity, Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and Karl-Renner Institut organized an expert meeting in Vienna on the threats of increasing populism and nationalism in Europe, challenges and alternatives to our democratic system and how to revitalise the EU enlargement process. This expert meeting was flowed by a meeting of left-wing political foundations active in SEE countries.
The meeting in Vienna took place in the light of the ‘Enhancing Democracy Pre and Post EU accession’ project. This project will analyse the obstacles of EU enlargement, putting the current democratic deficit at the core of its research focus, both within the EU and in the Southeast European Region and Turkey. During the meeting in Vienna we discussed three papers produced by the expert group members Dr. Theofanis Exadaktylos (University of Surrey), Rene Cuperus (Wiardi Beckman Stichting) and Dr. Bihter Somersan (Bahçeşehir University). These papers will contribute to the final outcome of the project, namely a publication. The aim is to contribute to the debate on the topic of the project and provide concrete conclusions and recommendation to PES, S&D Group in the European Parliament and to policymakers in Brussels and the EU members states.
On Sunday 10th of November political foundation active in SEE countries shortly presented their plans for 2014, discussing possibilities for increased cooperation.
