On 28 February the European Forum CEE Network for Gender Issues organised a conference on gender equality in the Croatian Parliament (Sabor). The event was organised in cooperation with the Committee for Gender Equality of the Croatian Parliament and ngo Centre for Education Consulting and Research.
The main aim of the conference was to analyse economic, social en political position of women during the financial and economic crisis and to develop new strategies that would improve cooperation between women active in political parties and civil society organisations. Distinguished speakers, such as former member of the US House of Representatives Connie Morella, addressed the audience. It was concluded among others that women are the main victims of the crisis. In order to improve their position in society women should have a united and comprehensive approach. In order to achieve this new models of cooperation should be developed. In politics women from different political spectra should cooperate more closely. One of the main challenges in improving the position of women is to fight against the traditional and patriarchal perception in the society that the ideal women is a housewife. Furthermore, it is important to improve the implementation of the law on gender equality. Finally, it was noted that women should act more powerful in order for their demands to be taken more seriously.
